15 Foods That Boost Your Metabolism

Wouldn't it be great if you could just pop a pill and get the body you have always wanted? Yeah, we would all like something as easy as that, and supplement companies are well aware of this and flood our televisions and magazines with commercials and advertisement s that promise to do that. Unfortunately they never deliver. I bought some of that Hydroxycut once and didn't see anything but finger nails bitten down to the wicks and an ability to talk to anyone about anything, even people I didn't like, so fast that I wouldn't even come up for air mid sentence. I didn't lose any weight but my social life was never better. However you don't need to spend your hard earned money on pills and potions to help you shed some fat, in fact it may just be as easy as opening your own refrigerator door, because today we are going to look at some foods, all natural, that can help boost and raise your metabolism, and help you on your path to achieve your health and fitness goals.

Grapefruit
Not only is this tasty food packed with Vitamin C and a load of fiber to keep you feeling full, but it turns out it contains chemicals that reduces insulin. Meaning lower blood sugar spikes and therefore increased fat loss. A recent study of 100 men and women showed that participants ate half a grapefruit at every meal lost on average 3.6 pounds, while those who drank grapefruit juice lost 3.3 pounds. I think eating a grapefruit at every meal is a little excessive, but one or even two a day wouldn't be that bad...

Celebrity Body Secrets - Mario Lopez

There is an old saying that if you compare yourself to other people, you will never be happy. Well you had better pass me the Zoloft  because I think I am destined to live a life of upside down smiley faces, dead puppies and Sarah McLachlan songs, for I would personally sell a kidney if you told me it would give the body of Mario Lopez. The guy has incredible muscle tone and minimal body fat that would have even the most self confident gym junkie looking down at themselves in comparison. But you don't have to be an A list celebrity with a ton of money to get a body like Mario, and today we are going to take a look at some of the tips and techniques he uses to remain healthy and in shape.

Let's face it, the guy is genetically blessed. Even if you look way back to when he was starring on Saved By The Bell, you could see he had great muscle tone and minimal body fat. Some people are just lucky to have good genetics. I have a friend who can eat whatever he wants; burgers, pizza, ice cream, and never puts on an once of fat, where is all I have to do is look at a french fry and I bloat. But whether you have good genetics or not, you still have to work at staying in shape, and Mario certainly does that. He works out hard, watches what he eats, and never takes what he has been given for granted. Let's take a look at some of his workout and diet specifics...

Top Weight Loss and Muscle Building Apps

I lost my iPhone last month, and there was a period of three weeks where I was using an old flip phone that was the size of a brick and had the functionality of a box of hair. During this time I found myself cut off from everything, unable to use my gadget to catch up on important things like world news or when Countess Luanne's latest single was going to drop. I was basically convinced my life was over. Looking back on it, I guess I was being a little dramatic, but the fact of the matter is that we are growing increasingly dependent on our phones and their applications to connect us with the world around us, leaving some to agree it is pushing us forward technologically in leaps and bounds, while others argue it is a social distraction. Well today we are going to focus on some positive aspects of the progresses with technology, as we look at some apps that for only a few bucks, could not only improve your health and fitness, but help keep you on track to achieve you muscle building or fat loss goals.

Want to lose weight? There's an app for that. Want to build muscle? There's an app for that too. Want to be fit and healthy and do it as cheaply as possible? There are endless supplies of apps for your needs. I have spent some time to put together a list of my top favorite Health and Fitness apps, and show you how they can help you track and achieve your goals. Lets take a look...

The Difference Between Grass and Grain Fed Beef

Who doesn't love a good steak? There is just something about biting into a large chunk of red meat that resonates with our ancestry and makes our salivary glands overflow with drool with the mere anticipation of devouring it. That little crunch as you bite into nicely seared crust on the outside, followed by a mouthful of moist and tender meat on the inside could be classified as pure bliss. I eat a lot of chicken. In fact I have been known to clear out the entire poultry section at the grocery store in one swipe to get my protein for the week, and people give me funny looks like I belong on that hoarders show on A & E when I arrive at the checkout with carts overflowing with frozen chicken breasts. "2012" I say with a straight face which normally sees them pull their children closer and run off leaving their change behind. But sometimes, chicken just aint gonna cut it, and I like to throw a nice piece of juicy red meat in my cart to grill up one or twice a week. But what if I told you that the red meat you buy at the supermarket, or order at your local restaurant, could be giving you a range of health benefits, or causing you a myriad of diseases and illnesses as well as making you fat, depending on what the cow was fed? It can, so lets find out why.
A few months back I wrote a post about a documentary I watched called Food, Inc. It was an incredibly eye opening insight into the food industry about practices that we had always suspected or heard wives tales about, such as how some food manufacturing farms cut off chicken's beaks, that ended up being true. If you watch it, it will change the way you look at, and think of food. I highly recommend it. One of the sections of the film talks about cows, how they are raised and slaughtered, and what processing happens to the meat before it arrives in that pretty plastic packaging in your grocery store. There is so much that I could talk about on this topic, but today we are going to focus on how the cows are raised, specifically whether they are grass fed or grain fed, what the difference is between the two, and what it means to you...

Are You A Hardgainer?

Imagine that you could eat whatever you want and not put on a pound of fat. Pizza, McDonalds, chocolate, nothing was off limits, all you could eat all day, every day, and your body would barely change. Personally, I would give my first born child, endure back to back marathons of The Ghost Whisperer with Jennifer Love-Crazy, and listen to Heidi Montag's song on repeat if you told me I could eat endless brownie sundaes and not end up with a booty with it's own zip code. But while this may sound appealing to some, it is a nightmare for many others, particularly males, who eat as much as they can in an effort to put on muscle and get rid of their super skinny frame, yet have metabolisms so high that they can never achieve the body they desire. In the fitness and bodybuilding worlds, these people are what's known as a 'Hardgainer" and today we are going to look at exactly what that is, why it is, and some tips and techniques that they, or anyone out there who is finding it difficult to put on muscle, can adopt to help them buff up and fill out.

The definition of a hardgainer is someone, who in attempting to increase muscle mass by lifting weights in the gym, never sees any increases in muscle atrophy (size and growth) no matter how many hours they spend in the gym, not matter how hard their workouts are, and no matter how heavy the weight is they are lifting. They normally have an ectomorph body type and are naturally lean and skinny with little to no bodyfat, and have higher metabolisms than most people that burn through the calories they eat at an incredibly fast rate...

What's Really In Your Condiments

Hi, my name is Adam, and I'm a sauce-a-holic. Yes people, I have an addiction... to Ketchup. I smother it on everything, from mashed potato, to turkey sandwiches, and even my eggs in the morning. If I get to the fridge to find that little bottle empty and I have none to put on my scramble, it can send me into a Mel Gibson type tirade, screaming obscenities into my refrigerator and knocking out it's too front draws. Sometimes when I wake during the night I swear I can hear that little tub of red heavenly goodness beckoning me from the refrigerator, tempting me to lather it onto anything I can get my hungry little hands on. So what's so bad about ketchup? I mean it's just a whole lot of tomatoes that have been smooshed and pureed into a bottle right? Wrong. Turns out it has a lot of other ingredients added in which can not only unassumingly ruin even the most diligent eater's weight loss plan, but can destroy your health also. Today we are going to take a look at not only ketchup, but all condiments, what's lurking in them that you don't know about, which are the good, and which are the ones making you fat.

What would life be without condiments? Our salads would be dry, our breads would be lifeless, and Paula Dean would be rocking back and forth in the fetal position, pulling out her hair out and mumbling "end of days, end of days!" The whole BBQ industry would basically collapse. I mean pulled pork and ribs without sauce? You may as well munch on some cardboard. We have grown to love and rely on our condiments to jazz up our food, and so many recipes call for condiments and if you don't add them, the whole meal can be ruined. But gone are the days where they were just one or two ingredients. In an effort to cut costs and provide products that last longer and taste more appealing, food manufactures now refine and process condiments to an inch of their life, and throw in nasty chemicals and additives that are slowly killing us and making us fat. Lets take a look at some of them...

Celebrity Body Secrets - Hugh Jackman

If you were ever lucky enough to see Hugh Jackman dancing and cha-cha'ing across the stage like the Energizer Bunny after one too many Redbulls in The Boy from Oz, you will know that the guy has raw talent. Not only can he sing and dance at the same time - yes Britney, it is possible - he captivates audiences world wide and remains grounded as a genuinely nice guy while doing so. But in his incredible ability to seemingly channel the essence of the famous Peter Allen on stage, he embodied him also, dancing away the pounds and revealing a long and lean figure. But it was his role as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise that got tongues wagging as he packed on pounds of solid muscle to reveal a big and buff torso without a love handle in sight. How did he do it? His trainers, Michael Ryan and Steve Ramsbottom, tell us how he went from Broadway star to ripped superhero.

The Workout
Michael Ryan, Hugh's Australian Personal Trainer and long time best friend, believes you train more intensely in the morning as opposed to the afternoon, so he would have Hugh up at the crack of dawn to hit the weights. Michael had Hugh focus on compound, multi joint exercises such as squats and deadlifts, as well as presses to achieve optimal muscle fiber utilization...

Are Egg Yolks Bad For You?

If you were to ever come over to my apartment and raid my refrigerator Gillian McKeith style (if you don't know who she is - click here, she is the God of nutrition in the UK and will totally cut you, fillet you and use your skin as a pashmina if she finds anything processed in your fridge - LOVE her), you would find that I always have it stocked with three staples: Spinach, cottage cheese, and liquid egg whites. I prefer buying the liquid egg whites because I can't be bothered sitting there cracking each egg and separating the white from the yolks, and I have better things to do like watching that addictive mess that is The Real Housewives of New Jersey and hitting replay to watch Danielle get her weave pulled out in slow motion over and over again. I use egg whites because I like a large breakfast and like most people don't want the fat and calories contained in the yolk. Well it turns out I may have been doing my body a disservice. You see some people, maybe even you reading this, avoid egg yolks because you have been told they are high in cholesterol, saturated fat, and will cause your backside to balloon to Kardashian proportions. But it turns out not only are eggs good for you, but they can actually help reduce cholesterol, as well as help you build those biceps and shrink those thunder thighs.

Back in the 70's, information started coming out about cholesterol, how it can clog up your arteries, cause cardiovascular disease, and leave you sitting in a hospital bed hooked up to an IV while you await to have triple bypass surgery. This sent the medical community into a tail spin and professionals started advising people to avoid foods that contain dietary cholesterol like shrimp and egg yolks. But we have come a long way over the last 40 years and now know there are different types of cholesterol, one is good and one is bad, and the cholesterol found in foods doesn't necessarily mean an increase in the cholesterol that clogs you up. Lets take a look at the difference between the two...

How To Gain Muscle And Lose Fat At The Same Time

Feeling a little flabby? Have those new man-spanks started to look appealing to you in the department store window? Perhaps you have been making a weekly visit to the spray tanner to have your abs "contoured"? What you need to increase your muscle mass and lose some fat. But Personal Trainers and fitness experts always tell us that you cannot gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. You need to be in a calorie surplus to gain muscle, and you need to be in a calorie deficit to lose fat. Two goals that completely conflict with one another. Well there was a body transformation contest recently, where contestants followed a specific type of training and nutrition plan, and not only did they put on muscle, but they actually lost fat... at the same time. There was no "bulking up" or "cutting up" phases, just a few new training and eating techniques applied, and now the same principles that those contestants used are available to Healthy Boy readers...

It's called The Holy Grail Body Transformation Program, and it was designed by fitness expert Tom Venuto. Tom has years of training and knowledge, is a best selling fitness author, and developed and tested this program in a body transformation contest recently. In this program Tom teaches us a few new techniques when it comes to training and nutrition which is the cornerstone to putting on muscle and burning fat at the same time, and he also includes a workout program, meal plans, calorie calculator and a food database.

The good news for Healthy Boy readers is that because Tom is only just launching this new product, he is offering it at a discount price for a limited time only. Instead of the usual $47.00 this program would cost, Healthy Boy readers are able to get it for $29.97. The other good news is you don't have to wait for it to be delivered or if you live overseas you don't have to pay for shipping. It's a completely downloadable book that you can have on your computer within seconds. Buy it here.

Enjoy.

Why Honey and Agave Are Not Better Than Sugar

Do you have a sweet tooth? I do. In fact I have a whole set of them. I don't really ever get excited by greasy fattening foods like burgers, fries or pizza, but if you put a brownie sundae or a candy bar in front of me, my pupils dilate and I get a look of hungry determination like Aretha Franklin when she storms into an all you can eat buffet. But recent research shows that sugar is the bad guy not only from a fat loss perspective, but also from a health and well being standpoint, so companies come out with artificial sweeteners doused with chemicals which promise to help us lose weight, and health "gurus" recommend natural alternatives like honey and agave nectar to sweeten up our foods and beverages. But what if I told you that these natural sweeteners, while better for your body than those little pink or yellow packets of chemicals you throw into your coffee and tea, were just as bad as sugar when it comes causing weight gain? Yes, that's right. Honey and Agave Nectar, because of some clever marketing and advertising, may be the reason you are looking a little more pooh and a little less tigger this summer.

There was a turning point in the American diet in the 70's and 80's when a study came out with statistics that showed diets high in fat were a leading cause of heart and cardiovascular disease. This sent consumers into a panic and saw them running away from their meat and eggs and scrambling over each other to buy high carbohydrate foods such as white breads and other sugar laden products. It created the introduction of cheap food products such as high fructose corn syrup and trans fats. Thankfully we have come a little further since then and we now know that not all fats are bad, and in fact some fats such as Essential Fatty Acids are needed for proper bodily function and can even help us in our weight loss efforts. But unftunately we still encounter the aftermath of that craze, with our supermarket shelves stocked with processed food products, high in nasty and unhealthy refined carbohydrates, and left us for a taste of wanting more. More sugar that is...

How To Eat Italian Food And Not Get Fat

I've just got back from a 10 day vacation in new York where I spent a fair amount of time with my Italian in laws, and you know what that means... meatballs, pizza, and pasta. Three words that will either excite you or completely terrify you. Personally they get me excited, but then an hour or so after inhaling numerous servings of ridiculously large portions, I want to write my last will and testament and hang myself. You see Mom number 2 is an incredible cook and although I may be the Healthy Boy, when it comes to her meals, all bets are off. I dive in because I know I'm not going to be able to have such great comfort food for a long time and when I'm on vacation, I'm on vacation. There are some people however when trying to lose weight or embarking on a healthy eating plan, simply avoid Italian food altogether, but eating it doesn't mean you need to commit carb-icide or lay on the couch in a complete food coma for hours as your dreams of fitting into those skinny jeans this summer get dashed. You can incorporate Italian food into your healthy lifestyle without seeing your waistline expand, all you just need to know is a few little rules of thumb. So lets check em out.

Garlic Bread, Garlic Knots and Breadsticks
You may think those little knots you get at the pizzeria wouldn't be so bad for your diet but they are. These deceptive critters while small in size, are smothered in butter and oil and have around 90 - 100 calories per knot. A few of those and you have already had 300 calories before you meal has already begun. Avoid any bread before a meal altogether.

Heavy Metals Found in Your Protein Shakes

Are you one of those people who throw down a protein shake after you workout or even a few times a day? I am. I do recommend that people choose whole foods such as chicken breast, fish and lean meats to get enough protein each day, but a protein shake after you workout is the fastest way to get some fast absorbing protein to those bulging biceps after a grueling workout. Well it turns out there was some testing done recently into what actually gets thrown into our favorite post workout beverages, and surprisingly they found that a few popular brands contained traces of heavy metals. Tom Venuto did some digging into the study and has some good recommendations for us below. Check it out.

Heavy Metals Found In Protein Shakes: Should You Stop Drinking Them?

By Tom Venuto

www.BurnTheFat.com

A recent investigation on protein drinks has been causing waves of concern or even alarm to ripple through the fitness and bodybuilding world. Supplement companies are up in arms and people are wondering whether they should stop drinking protein shakes after the magazine said they tested 15 protein drinks for heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury) and 3 of them came up above the proposed safe limits…

Which Supplements Actually Work?

Out of all the fitness books I have read, most of them tell you not to waste your money on expensive and overrated fat burning and muscle building supplements, and to instead buy lots of whole nutritious food, which is the natural way to get lean, increase testosterone and build muscle. I tend to agree. Although if you wave something shinny in pretty packaging in front of my face and tell me it's going to make me look huge and ripped like Gerard Butler in 300 with minimal effort I will stupidly still part with my cash. This has seen me easily spend way too much money over the last 10 years and try every possible product under the sun. But there are a few products out there that do work and are recommended by fitness experts and personal trainers, so let's cut through the crap to identify the ones that do and don't work.

Creatine

What is it? A compound that is found naturally in the body in skeletal muscle, but also in red meats and fish, and as a supplement in pwder or capsule form, predominately in the form of creatine monohydrate.
What does it do? It increases the production of ATP, which is an energy source for musclular contraction within the body.
Does it work? Yes. The is the one supplement that nearly all professional bodybuilders and personal trainers recommend for increases in muscle mass and strength
Where to buy? You can buy creatine just about at any health or vitamin store. You can also buy it online here at Bodybuilding . com Optimum Micronized Creatine Powder, 150 Grams

Hot Product - Klean Kanteen

So after my article the other day on Why You Need To Stop Drinking Bottled Water, I recycled my Smart Water bottle which I had been reusing forever, and headed up to the store to see what substitute I could find. Preferably something that doesn't contain those nasty chemicals found in the plastic bottles that leach into the water. I mean guzzling down some Bisphenol or Benzene might sound appealing to some, but unless you want your body resembling the plastic from which you drank it *cough Heidi Montag cough* I'd rather drink from something safer. There are a few products available now that don't have BPA or made from plastics that leach, but the one I thought was the coolest was from Klean Kanteen.
They are drink bottles that are light weight and made from stainless steel, instead of plastic or metal, making it a great choice for your body and the planet. It has none of those nasty chemicals found in plastic bottles such as BPA, and doesn't contain any nasty aluminum either.

I must admit that the mouth piece opening is a lot bigger than a plastic water bottle which saw me spill some water on me at the gym at first, but it just made me look like I had been sweating more from a grueling workout. I quickly got the hang of it. You can also apparently get sports tops, but I didn't see any of these available.

Check em out.

The Side Effects Of Food Colorings

Remember when you were young and you would dig your hands into a big bag of Doritos or Cheetos and your fingers would come out all yellow and orange? What about how you would suck on Jaw Breakers or Gob Smackers only to find your mouth and tongue all blue and green? Those were the days. Back when Fraggle Rock and Pound Puppies were still on the air, you had plastic streamers on your handles bars, and you thought hypercolor t-shirts were the best thing ever invented. Some things may have changed but unfortunately if you still dig your hand into a bag or chips or suck on some candy, you are still going to get color all over you. Although your childhood may have been a time for some great memories, it turns out you were back then, and still are now, being exposed to unhealthy food colorings, dyes and additives that could be the reason for some of your current and future health concerns. Want to know what's even scarier?... they now put them in foods you would never expect.

What if I told you that there were chemicals in the food that you ate as a child, but more importantly, the food you are eating now, that are known carcinogens? Meaning they have been proven to cause cancer. What about if I told you a lot of these chemicals were banned in many countries across Europe and the rest of the world, but still allowed in your food here? It would make you pretty angry right? Well it turns out thats exactly what is happening...

What's Really In Your Whole Wheat Bread

Are you one of those crazy people who are still eating white bread? You may as well hook your arm up to an iv filled with bleach and processed sugar because that's basically what you're eating. In fact I have a hypothesis that even looking at it will cause you to bloat and see Green Peace pushing you back into the water this summer. If you read my column regularly you will know I advise against eating it, and anything white for that matter including white pasta and white rice. Maybe you are health conscious and buy whole wheat bread, believing you are doing your body a favor with all those slow digesting carbs and natural whole grains. Well I'm here to tell you that just because it says "whole wheat" doesn't mean it is, and the variety you maybe purchasing at the grocery store may be nothing more than white bread in disguise laden with nasty chemicals and artificial ingredients.

When you get to the bread isle there is an abundance of whole wheat varieties to choose from these days. You have honey wheat, multigrain, sprouted grains, rye, just to name a few, and we are bombarded with marketing slogans from food manufacturers stating things like "100% whole grain", "100% Natural" and "Made from Whole Wheat" leading us to believe we are eating something healthy. But we aren't always. Even though certain brands have these slogans, they are far from "Natural" and may still contain bleached white flour, sugar and salt, not to mention nasty fats and chemicals that are detrimental to your health and can make you fat. These ingredients are thrown into your "healthy" whole wheat bread by food manufactures, turning it into a cheap and profitable product for them, and a loaf of chemicals for you.

Lets take a look at some popular brands available here in the United States...
